Curator of Exhibitions

Employee Type: Full-time, Exempt

Manages Others: No

Reports To: Director of Exhibitions

Position Overview: The Curator of Exhibitions collaborates with HistoryMiami Museum staff, guest curators, and community partners to create innovative, inclusive, and accessible exhibitions that deepen public understanding of Miami’s unique cultural, historical, and social narratives.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of temporary exhibition content, including but not limited to research, script and label writing, object selection, audio-visual content development, and interactive component design.
  • Engage with Miami’s communities to source authentic narratives, encourage co-creation, and ensure that exhibits reflect the diversity of Miami’s voices and experiences.
  • As part of the Exhibition Proposals Committee, propose, solicit, review, evaluate, and recommend proposals for future exhibitions.
  • As part of the Exhibitions department, develop and manage exhibition project budgets, and create and manage exhibition production timelines.
  • With the Exhibitions and Collections departments, manage and participate in the design, production, and installation of temporary exhibitions.
  • With the Visitor Services and Education departments, ensure exhibits align with interpretive and educational goals and are adaptable for diverse audience engagement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in history, public history, anthropology, museum studies, or similar field of study.
  • 3 years’ experience curating narrative-based exhibitions.
  • Experience working with a broad range of partners, including artists, scholars, educators, guest curators, students, community advocates and leaders representing diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Eagerness to learn, teach others, and work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience creating engaging, multi-generational content and designing family-centered experiences in museums or similar public spaces.
  • Experience with digital media integration and design, particularly in creating immersive, multi-sensory, and interactive exhibition elements.
  • Experience with graphic design software, such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Experience in developing and integrating digital content, interactive multimedia, and sensory experiences for exhibitions.
  • Proficiency with Sketchup, or other 3D modeling software.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, communicate, and use repetitive motions;
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee may frequently lift and or move 25 pounds of materials;
  • The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from multiple people and interact with the public and other staff.
