LIFEGUARD II (SEASONAL) – SIERRA DISTRICT / LAKE TAHOE SECTOR

The possible reporting locations are Kings Beach State Recreation Area, Donner Memorial State Park, and Emerald Bay State Park. This position will report to the State Park Peace Officer Supervisor (Ranger).

The Lifeguard II is a uniformed, lead-person position responsible for ensuring visitor safety, protecting park resources, and providing leadership to Seasonal Lifeguard I staff. Lifeguard II shall perform various unskilled tasks necessary to ensure that public health and safety standards are maintained including detect hazardous ocean conditions and respond with search-and-rescue operations. Operate Code 3-equipped vehicles and rescue equipment. Enforce State Park rules and provide public safety-first aid. Train, coach, and evaluate Seasonal Lifeguard I staff. Promote workplace safety and follow established protocols. Communicate with supervisors and adhere to the district’s operations handbook. Complete documentation such as patrol logs, rescue reports, timesheets, and equipment checklists. Manage tasks in line with the seasonal lifeguard expenditure plan. Assist with the repair and maintenance of lifeguard equipment and facilities. Resource Management and Recreation, protect Park resources and ensure a high-quality visitor experience. Provide educational programs and community outreach.

This position can work 189 days in a 12 consecutive month period or a maximum of 1500 hours within 12 consecutive months per California Code of Regulation  . This position is designated as not telework eligible.  Must be available holidays and weekends. The ability to work outdoors in adverse weather and direct sun are required.  The purchase and wearing of a State Park Uniform will be required. State Parks grooming standards must be met.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

Working Conditions

The seasonal Lifeguard I duty locations are the Lifeguard Towers/Vehicles/Vessels/Dispatch and any other area in or about Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake as assigned by the lead person or supervisor. The seasonal Lifeguard 2 may work under adverse weather not limited to extreme heat/cold, wind, rain, lightning, and dynamic aquatic conditions. The seasonal Lifeguard 2 may be required to respond to environmental emergencies outside their normal working environment. The seasonal Lifeguard I must be willing to work within crowded conditions during hours/days of high park visitation.

Special Requirements

  • The position(s) require(s) a Background Investigation be cleared prior to being hired.

Per California Code of Regulations (CCR) , this is a sensitive position, and therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing. It should be noted that testing is not mandatory, but is allowed to be conducted only if and when there is a determination of reasonable suspicion as defined in CCR .

Note: Listed testing and training dates may change or cancelled due to weather, scheduling or operational needs. In accordance with Government Code 19063-19063.8, any person admitted to the interview and who is receiving public assistance under the CalWORKs Program shall be given priority consideration. Minimum of two seasons as a State Park Seasonal Lifeguard. Public Safety First Aid training (or higher), CPR certification, and a valid California Driver’s License with an approved DMV record. Completion of the 1,000-yard ocean swim test (under 20 minutes annually). Availability during spring and fall weekends, and at least four days per week in the summer.
